Looking for things to do with school wrapping up and summer on its way? The City of La Quinta’s Community Services Department always has lots of fun planned for its residents and neighbors.

The La Quinta Community Services Department has popular activities lined up, from the family-favorite flicks in their Moonlight Movies series to a tour of the valley’s best courses for golfers. These free and low-cost events bring a number of summer entertainment options to the community!

“The programs and classes we offer are open to everyone that wants to learn something new or just have a great time in our city,” said Recreation Supervisor, Tustin Larson. “We want our residents and everyone who lives in the Coachella Valley to take a look at the classes, and kids and family events that La Quinta has to offer.”

The Moonlight Movie screenings are a great way to kick off the weekend with family time on a Friday night. The twilight screenings start at 8 p.m. or later (depending on sunset that day) and feature recent box office movies. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on and let the kids stretch out as they watch the big screen hits. There are vendors for snacks or bring a picnic dinner.

The screenings take place at different times throughout the summer, but take a break for the month of June and resume in mid-July. The upcoming schedule includes “Saving Mr. Banks” on May 2 at La Quinta Park (corner of Adams Street and Westward Ho Drive, across from the high school); “The Nut Job,” May 16 at Monticello Park at Fred Waring Drive and Jefferson Street; “Captain America – First Avenger,” July 11 at Fritz Burns Pool at Avenue 52 and Avenida Bermudas; “The Avengers,” July 25 at Fritz Burns Pool; “Man of Steel,” Aug. 6, Fritz Burns Pool; and “The Amazing Spiderman,” Aug. 22 at Fritz Burns Pool.

Living in an area with so many public and private pools, learning to swim and basic pool safety is an essential part of desert life, which is why La Quinta has teamed up with the Family YMCA of the Desert to offer swim classes at the Fritz Burns Pool.

Upcoming classes include swim lessons and a youth triathlon that includes swimming, biking and a run through a kid-friendly course.

The next set of swim lessons at Fritz Burns pool run May 12 through 28 from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. There is also an adult Water Aerobics class from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and both Pre-Swim Team and a Stroke Clinic offered from 6 to 7p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

Registration for all classes is at the Family YMCA of the Desert at 43-930 San Pablo Ave. in Palm Desert. Contact: (760) 341-9622; www.ymcaofthedesert.org

The YMCA Triathlon (Y TRI) at Fritz Burns Park is for kids 5 to 8 years old and takes place at 8 a.m. May 17. The kids will learn to swim, bike and run through a safe triathlon course. It’s a non-competitive event that starts with a swim in the pool, then a track-free bike course and a run in the park. Participants need a swimsuit, a bike in good working order and bike helmet, along with a good pair of running shoes. The goal of the race is to create a positive physical activity experience. Each participant will receive a Y Tri finisher’s certificate and a bike helmet for the first 60 pre-registered participants. Day of registration is at 8 a.m., with the event start at 9 a.m. The cost is $10 per child. Pre-registration is at the Family Y in Palm Desert.

Golfers can take advantage of playing some of the Coachella Valley’s best courses with discounted greens fees with the Summer Golf Tour that runs Saturdays from May 31 to Aug. 23. The schedule and prices haven’t been announced, but players can find information on the “tour” at communityservices@la-quinta.org.

For golfers who prefer a disc to a set of clubs, the Disc Golf Tournament at 6 p.m. May 31 at La Quinta Park is open to players of all ages and experience levels. It’s $10 per player. The park is at Westward Ho Drive and Adams Street. For information and sign-ups, call (760) 777-7090 or go to communityservices@la-quinta.org
