In an era where music often feels rushed and digitalized, Derrik Lewis invites audiences to take a breath, sit back, and savor the sophistication of live jazz. For 16 years, the intimate ambiance of The Tropicale in Palm Springs has been home to Derrik Lewis and his trio, where they transport listeners to a realm of elegance and nostalgia every Tuesday from 4:30 to 7:30 PM.

Derrik Lewis’s journey to becoming one of the Coachella Valley’s most cherished performers is as captivating as his music. Born just outside of Philadelphia, Derrik made his television debut at the tender age of 15 and took his first professional Highway bow in 1960 on The Loretta Young Show. His acting career flourished with memorable appearances on The Twilight Zone, Route 66, My Three Sons, The Monkees, The Young and the Restless, and as Lieutenant O’Brien on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. He even lent his vocal talents to the soundtrack of Bye Bye Birdie.

Yet, despite his success on screen, Derrik’s heart found its true rhythm at the piano. “I wanted a career as an actor,” he recalls, “Being a pianist and singer was a hobby, something to do between film and theater jobs. My hobby has become my career.” It’s this genuine passion that resonates with his audiences week after week.

Locally, Derrik has graced the stage in over 15 productions at the Palm Canyon Theater, including his unforgettable portrayal of Liberace in Palm Springs Getaway and his recent role in Titanic the Musical. From 2000 to 2014, he was also the host and producer of the Musical Chairs concert series, a testament to his commitment to live performance and the arts.

Performing at The Tropicale is a homecoming for Derrik. The venue’s cozy, sophisticated atmosphere is the perfect backdrop for his trio’s smooth, elegant sound. Accompanied by some of the best jazz artists in the Coachella Valley, Derrik creates a close-knit, almost magical connection with his audience. It’s a place where music lovers can experience the intimacy of live jazz, up close and personal.

When asked about his inspirations, Derrik cites Paige Cavanaugh, Margaret Whiting, and Bobby Short as his mentors, saying, “They taught me good repertoire, style, and depth. Bobby’s advice was, ‘Sit down in one place and let people find you.’” It’s clear that Derrik took that wisdom to heart, creating a legacy of elegance and authenticity at The Tropicale.

Even offstage, Derrik’s zest for life continues. He is an avid traveler, exploring faraway places every year and maintaining a vibrant presence on social media. But no matter where his journeys take him, he always returns to Palm Springs, to that piano at The Tropicale, where elegance, nostalgia, and world-class jazz await.
