CV Weekly had the opportunity to speak to L.A.N.D.O., a Rap/Hip-Hop artist and producer from the Coachella Valley, in anticipation of his tour kick-off.
CVW: What does Underground Rap mean to you?
L.A.N.D.O.: “Underground Rap means being raw. Showing the great and terrible parts of life. It’s about being who I am regardless of outside opinions. At the end of the day, I’m here to tell my truth and show that I can make things happen regardless of the situations that life throws at me”.
CVW: You’re a young artist. Who are some of the artists who influenced you? Any individual or group outside of the arts?
L.A.N.D.O.: “I could make a long list of my influences. To name a few: $uicideboy$, Rancid, Jon Bellion, BONES, and Pouya. Outside of music I’m influenced by the skating scene. Like music, it’s about showing the rawness of life. One side of it they’re getting scrapped and bruised but on the other side they’re landing tricks people will remember forever!”
CVW: You’re a big supporter of mental health. Where did that start?
L.A.N.D.O.: “Yeah, mental health is important to me. It started at a young age. I was born with biliary atresia, a pediatric liver disease. This led to cirrhosis of the liver and an enlarged spleen and a lot of doctor visits and surgeries. I still have to complete mandatory regular checkups. With all that, I understood at a young age that life is unforgiving and can really beat you down at times”.
“When people are struggling, they can feel alone in it, there’s a lot of people that struggle daily. Music has been my way of communicating my feelings and emotions. If telling my story through music can help someone in a positive way, then I’m going to do that”.
CVW: Having music released and shooting videos are necessary to remain relevant in today’s market. But performing live is a whole other animal and probably the most important element in reaching your fans. What do you enjoy most about live performance?
L.A.N.D.O.: “I put a lot of time and energy into the music so when I get to perform on stage that’s the final step. I get to release all the energy I feel from the music and it’s awesome! I love to connect with people after the show and talk about my lyrics and about our struggles and successes. I’m typically a quiet and shy person, performing is when I feel like myself and am most comfortable, ironically”.
CVW: This will be your first time performing at The Dune Room. What are you most looking forward to?
L.A.N.D.O.: “First off, I appreciate Ron Mesh, owner of The Dune Room, for the opportunity to host the first Rap show at The Dune Room. I’m looking forward to the whole experience. It’s going to be a great show with high energy. Any opportunities I receive, I enjoy going all out and putting 100% effort into it, so I’m looking forward to leaving everything on that stage”.
CVW: Your family is very supportive. What would you like to say to them publicly?
L.A.N.D.O.: “Yeah, they are super supportive and I’m very thankful for it. In the world of performing arts, it can be difficult to get support from family because it’s not a ‘typical’ career choice, but I just had to show them that this is what I truly want to do in life and they supported it. They listen to the songs all the time, learn the lyrics, show up to every show I have, it’s pretty cool actually. Love you guys!”
CVW: Please answer this question only if you feel comfortable doing so. I noticed you have a speech impediment. What have been some of the challenges with that and being an artist?
L.A.N.D.O.: “I’ve had a stutter since I can remember, it’s genetic, my grandma had one and a cousin too. To be honest, it was the cause of my social anxiety growing up. It wasn’t necessarily that I was nervous of talking to people, I was just nervous of stuttering when I did. It led me to be shy. In recording music or performing it’s not an issue at all; it’s almost like that part of my brain isn’t on so I’m able to do what I need to”.
CVW: You have some special guests, merch and elements to your upcoming show. Anything you’d like to share about it?
L.A.N.D.O.: “All the special guests on this show are homies and achievers. They’ve all worked hard to build themselves and it’s awesome to share a stage with friends who have the same mindset. At all my shows I bring merch for people to purchase if they like the shirt or want to support me, without them I wouldn’t have a platform in the first place. I incorporate new elements with each new show to up the game and bring a whole new experience that people can remember”.
CVW: What would you like to share about MCKG?
L.A.N.D.O.: “The DAWG MCKG! You must surround yourself with people who have similar mindsets and want the best out of themselves and that’s what he does. His songs bring a lot of energy and he talks about real topics that people can relate to. We both have been wanting to do a tour so we decided why not combine both platforms and set one up.”
CVW: How did you come up with the “Add This To Your Playlist” name for your tour?
L.A.N.D.O.: “We wanted the name of the tour to be one that could fall under a collective. Everyone’s music is a little different so we didn’t want a name that felt suitable to only MCKG and myself. Since there are special guests with us that will accompany us throughout the tour, we chose a name that encompasses everyone. So, when you see them performing, make sure to ADD THIS TO YOUR PLAYLIST”.
CVW: Anything else you’d like to add?
L.A.N.D.O.: “Appreciate the questions! Some of these questions I have never been asked before so it was cool to share my thoughts with y’all and you guys can get to learn more about me, the tour with MCKG, and hope to see some of y’all at the show on May 1st! Go stream my latest album Dressed for Despair, out on all platforms!”
