Community invited to free family-friendly event in honor of Indio’s 96th Birthday and National Kids to Parks Day
INDIO, CA (April 30, 2026) – The City of Indio invites residents and visitors to celebrate the grand opening of the new Indio Sports Park on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This special community event will mark the official public opening of the City’s newest recreational destination while also celebrating Indio’s 96th birthday and National Kids to Parks Day.
The free, family-friendly celebration will feature activities for all ages, including games, giveaways, and opportunities for the community to explore the new 30-acre sports park. The Indio Sports Park features 11 soccer fields, including a professional-level field adaptable for football, two baseball and softball fields, a perimeter walking path, picnic areas with shade structures and BBQs, and essential amenities such as restrooms, drinking fountains, and a concession stand.
“The Indio Sports Park represents a major investment in our community and our future,” said Mayor Elaine Holmes. “This space was shaped by our residents and built to support our youth, bring families together, and create a vibrant place for recreation and community life. We are proud to invite our community and celebrate this milestone together.”
Located in the heart of Indio with convenient access to the I-10 freeway and nearby businesses along Jackson Street and Monroe Street, the park is expected to serve as both a neighborhood amenity and a regional destination. This $12.9 million project was made possible through a combination of funding sources, including an $8.5 million State Parks Proposition 68 grant, along with Measure X, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, and the City’s General Fund.
The community is encouraged to attend the grand opening event, enjoy the new park, and take part in a day of celebration that highlights the importance of outdoor play, community wellness, and access to high-quality public spaces.
