There’s something unforgettable about a resort that makes you immediately start imagining a different life.
Not just extending your vacation by a few days, but the kind of escape that has you browsing local real estate listings over morning coffee and daydreaming about calling this destination home.
That was exactly how I felt on a recent trip to Dreams Bahia Mita Surf & Spa. After just a few sun-soaked hours at this sprawling oceanfront resort, I suddenly found myself wondering about what a new life would look like along the coast in Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit.
Perched along the coastline north of Puerto Vallarta, this massive beachfront property feels like a destination all of its own. Removed from the crowds and bustle of downtown Puerto Vallarta, Dreams Bahia Mita occupies a quieter stretch of coastline where jungle-covered mountains meet the bay. The setting feels secluded without feeling completely isolated, which is a harder balance to find that most think.
But what impressed me the most wasn’t the gorgeous scenery, the luxe rooms, or the endless food and drinks. It was actually how effortlessly the resort handled family travel.
As a solo mom traveling with a toddler, I’ve learned (the hard way, at times) that there’s often a huge gap between a resort calling itself “family-friendly” and being genuinely designed with families in mind. Luckily for us, Dreams Bahia Mita falls solidly into the second category.
From the moment we arrived, it felt as though every detail had actually been considered: A welcome drink for mom and a smoothie for my toddler; a room on the lobby level (meaning no juggling a stroller and suitcases in an elevator); and even a bottle sterilizer waiting in our room. Around nearly every turn, I was greeted with these small details that may not seem like much on the surface, but make all the difference when traveling with a toddler.
The property itself is enormous–but it manages to feel like an oasis, rather than overwhelming. One of the resort’s biggest strengths is its thoughtful layout. Dreams Bahia Mita shares its oceanfront property with an adults-only sister resort, Secrets, which creates a unique balance between family-friendly fun and elevated relaxation. Families have access to multiple pools, kid-friendly dining options, activities, and plenty of space to spread out, while adults can still enjoy quieter areas throughout the resort.
We spent much of our stay rotating between the pools, which seemed designed to accommodate every type of traveler. While there was no shortage of regular-depth pools, we loved spending mornings in the shallow wading pools that were perfect for a toddler just learning to swim. Even better, this was the first resort experience I’ve had in Puerto Vallarta where we didn’t need to wake up before sunrise to battle for pool chairs. No matter which pool we ended up at throughout the day, there was always room to settle in without feeling crowded.
The dining experience was equally impressive. Even with a toddler in tow, meals felt easy instead of stressful–and that is not something you catch a toddler mom saying ever. The variety of restaurants and the sprawling buffet meant there was always something for everyone, whether we were grabbing a quick breakfast before heading to the pool or sitting down for a leisurely dinner as the sun set over the ocean. The buffet was especially family-friendly, with an entire kids’ section filled with toddler favorites like waffles, pancakes, and a milk dispenser with chocolate and strawberry varieties.
Of course, the views deserve their own mention. Nearly everywhere you look, you’re greeted by sweeping ocean vistas, swaying palms, and the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra Madre mountains. It’s the kind of scenery that reminds you that you’ve escaped to somewhere truly special.
By the end of our stay, I understood why so many guests return again and again.
Dreams Bahia Mita is a beautiful resort, but the true magic lies in its experience. This is the type of resort that makes travel seem effortless, even when traveling solo with a toddler. Here, parents can actually relax, kids can simply be kids, and everyone leaves feeling both refreshed and rejuvenated.
And if you’re anything like me, you may leave with something else, too: a growing list of reasons why moving to Riviera Nayarit suddenly sounds like a very good idea.
