Inaugural Coachella Valley Assistant Coach Tapped as New Head Coach of Minnesota Wild’s AHL Affiliate
The Coachella Valley Firebirds, proud affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Seattle Kraken, announced today that Assistant Coach Stu Bickel has been named Head Coach of the Iowa Wild, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Minnesota Wild.
Bickel departs Coachella Valley after serving on the Firebirds’ coaching staff since the organization’s inaugural season in 2022-23. During his four seasons behind the bench, he played a pivotal role in the development of the club’s defense and helped establish the Firebirds as one of the AHL’s premier organizations.
“Stu has been an integral part of what we’ve built here in the Coachella Valley,” said Firebirds’ General Manager Troy Bodie. “His hockey knowledge, work ethic, and passion for developing players have made a lasting impact on our organization. We’re incredibly grateful for everything he has done for the Firebirds, and while we’ll miss having him on our staff, we’re excited to see him earn this well-deserved opportunity to lead his own team. We wish Stu and his family nothing but success in Iowa.”
Working alongside Head Coaches Dan Bylsma and Derek Laxdal, Bickel helped guide the Firebirds to sustained success while mentoring numerous prospects who have gone on to make an impact with the Seattle Kraken. Bickel’s work with the organization’s young defensemen has been instrumental in the continued growth of the Kraken pipeline.

Before joining the Firebirds, Bickel served as an assistant coach with the Springfield Thunderbirds and previously held coaching positions at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota, and was the Head Coach of the North American Hockey League’s Minnesota Magicians. As a player, the Chanhassen, MN native appeared in 76 NHL games with the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild while skating in 310 AHL contests during a 10-year professional career.
The Coachella Valley Firebirds thank Stu for his dedication and contributions to the organization and wish him and his family all the best as he begins his new role with the Iowa Wild. The search for a new Assistant Coach will begin immediately.
