A Practice Rooted in Emotional Truth
Sébastien Montel’s paintings are often described as “emotionally unfiltered” and “quietly disruptive.” His figures are faceless or distorted, not to obscure identity, but to reflect the psychological depth that sits beneath appearances. “I don’t paint from observation,” says Sébastien Montel. “I paint from what I feel, and often from what’s difficult to name. My goal isn’t to create clarity — it’s to create presence.”
A Move Toward the Desert
Having spent years based in Los Angeles, Sébastien Montel now lives and works part-time in Palm Springs, where his connection to light, silence, and open space is finding new expression in his art. The desert, he says, brings a kind of psychological distance that mirrors the emotional space in his work.
