Seniors that have reached the “Use by Date” are the most common victims of Scammers. This is especially true in the CV where we have more elderly, who are naturally the most gullible victim to SCAMS. Though I am an ACCIDENT/DUI Lawyer, I have over the years, felt compelled to alert readers of my legal columns and Legal Talk Show, to the scams out there. This could be happening to you, your parents or grandparents…so pay attention.
In 2024, scammers are using Artificial Intelligence to mimic voices from loved ones, and thus not every scam call, text and voicemail has a real person on the other end. Scammers use AI to make their tricks more believable by using technology to find information.
Email phishing and deep fake videos are among the advanced AI’s used to scam people. Scammers also utilize vocal recognition technology to mimic the voices of victims’ loved ones. “If you are phoned by a loved one in distress, having a code word can help you identify if they are genuine.” Of course, it is smart to keep social media pages private, thus making it harder for scammers to access your personal information.
When purchasing online, you must be cautious as it is currently a hot spot for scammers. They create phoney websites, sell counterfeit goods, and trigger panic by calling or texting to indicate that something is wrong with a shipment or order. Often the return policies are ridiculous, or vendors disappear when something goes wrong. This is not to different from some local CV contractors who take your money and disappear.
QR code scams work by embedding malicious links or files within an innocent-looking QR code. Scammers plant these codes in public places like parking lots, on business cards, or within advertisements, hoping to snag unsuspecting suckers. Once scanned, the code redirects one to a fake website impersonating a legitimate brand or prompts the automatic download of malware onto the phone. Statistics show QR code scams are on the rise.
Be on the lookout for QR code scams such as: Phishing websites impersonating banks, payment services, or online retailers to steal login credentials and payment information. Also be cautious of Malware-laced QR codes that install spyware, ransomware, or other viruses once scanned, allowing scammers to access sensitive data on the phone.
The Desert Sun recently reported Federal authorities are ramping up their war on phone scams with “Operation Stop Scam Calls”, resulting in millions of fines and bans…why not the death penalty or something more extreme. There are 5 companies that will be fined $18 Million, a drop in the proverbial bucket. There are over 33 Million scam robo-calls per DAY in the USA. These calls target the most vulnerable Americans and include Social Security Administration fraud against seniors. Yup, that’s us in the CV who are approaching the USE BY DATE.
The Feds want to stop what are called “lead generation consent farms” that trick seniors by offering free prizes, rewards or even potential job leads if one provides their personal info. The scammers then sell that consent to telemarketers which results in more robo-calls.

DRINKING/TEXTING CAUSE ARRESTS/ACCIDENTS. CALLING A TAXI/UBER IS CHEAPER THAN CALLING ME.
