It is with great sadness we announce the passing of one of our beloved writers, Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.
Sam was born on August 10, 1959 and passed on December 31, 2025, after having a massive heart attack on December 18, which he never regained consciousness from.
Sam was the Chief of Monrovia Fire Department. He started his firefighter career at age 18 and held every position until he made it to Chief. Then he took the Chief job at the Verdugo Fire Academy from age 46 until he passed.
He wrote the Safety column for CV Weekly for many years.
He was survived by his fiancé Janet Lerch, who was by his side at the end.
Sam touched so many people with his kindness and generosity. He will live on in our hearts. RIP dear friend.
