In a scene that’s constantly evolving, there are a few names that stand as pillars, and Jamie Hargate is one of them. As a driving force behind The Hellions, Hargate has spent years helping shape the raw, unfiltered sound that defines Coachella Valley rock from the inside out.

This isn’t about hype or trends. It’s about grit, volume, and staying power. The Hellions have built their reputation the old-school way, loud shows, real crowds, and zero compromise, and Hargate’s guitar work sits right at the center of that storm. There’s a sense of purpose in the way he plays: aggressive when it needs to be, dialed-in when it counts, and always in service of the song.

What sets Hargate apart is consistency. In a world where bands come and go, he’s stayed locked in, continuing to create, perform, and represent a sound that’s deeply rooted in the desert. It’s that dedication that’s earned respect from fellow musicians and longtime fans alike.

Whether it’s a packed local venue or a gritty late-night set, Jamie Hargate brings the same energy every time: real, loud, and unapologetic.

CVW: What originally sparked your journey into music, and what made you stick with it?

Hargate: Fun sparked it and fun has kept us going. Long live Rock-n-Roll!!!

CVW: The Hellions have a distinct sound, how would you describe it in your own words?

Hargate: It’s just good ol’ Rock-n-Roll with a Punk Rock twist.

CVW: What keeps the fire alive for you after all these years of playing?

Hargate: The fun of it. It is a blast playing with these dudes and the best part is, it’s the same dudes for the last 20+ years… they alight…

CVW: How has your guitar style evolved since the early days of the band?

Hargate: 2-3 chord punk rock to 4-5 chord punk rock!

CVW: What’s been one of the most unforgettable Hellions shows you’ve played?

Hargate: So, so many shows with so many great bands it’s hard to pick one… but off the top of my head, probably an old Red Barn show that accumulated the most booze sales in history (the crowd’s enthusiasm was amplified a bit that night) and a bass guitar stuck in the ceiling by the night’s end (thanx to Fateful Day). The best part was going back to the bar in the morning to check the damage, apologize for all the broken stuff and the owner of the bar saying (who was there that morning) “with all the sales last night, you guys are welcome any time”. Ha, good times!

CVW: How important is the Coachella Valley scene to your identity as a musician?

Hargate: VERY important. I’m a Desert Dude… born here, live here and love it here. Super stoked to be a part of it and super proud of the music that has come out of the Coachella Valley.

CVW: What’s your process when writing or building a new song with the band?

Hargate: Start w/ the riff or beat and build away. Technology is a plus… record, write, delete, write some more, save… etc

CVW: Are there any upcoming shows, releases, or projects fans should be watching for?

Hargate: Yes! We do have a show on May 9th at the Dune Room in Indio w/ Instigator. Plus 2026 is going to be a great year for The Hellions. Started off the year with some killer shows w/ more to come but the best news is we’re in the middle of pre-production for the next album. Super excited as we have 20-ish songs in the pipeline and hope to have an E.P. out in the near future and full length to follow shortly after.

CVW: What advice would you give to younger bands trying to build something that lasts?

Hargate: The number one thing is to have fun. Create your space and thrive!

CVW: Where can fans find you?

Hargate: #thehellionsofficial (instagram), the facebook’s, the spotify and thehellions1.bandcamp.com

Jamie Hargate represents the kind of artist that keeps a local scene alive, not just through talent, but through commitment. And as long as The Hellions are making noise, you can count on him to be right there, plugged in and pushing it forward.

That’s a wrap on this week’s Local Music Spotlight, but the party doesn’t stop here. Hit the shows, feel the beats, and keep the valley’s music scene thriving. Because around here, the next song that changes your life might be playing tonight.
