Audiences in the Coachella Valley are in for a bold and hilarious theatrical treat as Palm Canyon Theatre presents The Ritz, a wildly entertaining farce by Terrence McNally, running May 8–17, 2026. Originally premiering in the 1970s, this high-energy comedy remains as sharp and relevant as ever, blending quick-witted dialogue with unapologetic flamboyance to deliver a joyful celebration of individuality, identity, and self-expression.
Set in the heart of Manhattan, The Ritz follows the frantic misadventures of Gaetano Proclo, played by Donald Kelley, an anxious everyman on the run from a dangerous situation who stumbles into an unexpected sanctuary—a lively gay bathhouse. What unfolds is a whirlwind of mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, and escalating chaos as Gaetano navigates a world far outside his comfort zone. Through its fast-paced humor and outrageous scenarios, the play reveals a deeper message rooted in acceptance, humanity, and the freedom to be oneself.
Stealing the spotlight amid the mayhem is Googie Gomez, portrayed by Olga Morales, an ambitious and delightfully over-the-top performer whose confidence and theatrical flair electrify the stage. Her journey, surrounded by a colorful and eccentric cast of characters, captures the heart of the production—embracing authenticity in a world that often tries to impose labels. The ensemble cast brings energy and precision to every moment, featuring standout performances from Brent Anderson, Katt Atkins, Ron Coronado, Nick Edwards, Cliff Goodrich, Adam Hieter, Rob Kreisinger Denk, Larry Martin, Steffon Martindale, Michael Mazzuca, Timothy Rathke, Marvin Rea, Steve Shane, Derik Shopinski, James Slaybaugh, Terry Huber, and Christine Tringali-Nunes.
Under the direction of David Beris, the production is brought to life with vibrant scenic and lighting design by J.W. Layne and eye-catching costumes by Derik Shopinski, enhancing the show’s dynamic and immersive atmosphere. The result is a rapid-fire comedy that feels both riotous and refreshingly authentic, offering audiences plenty of laughs alongside moments of genuine heart.
The Ritz runs at Palm Canyon Theatre from May 8 through May 17, with performances scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. on Sundays, and 7 p.m. on Thursdays.
