A Fundraiser Artfully Curated by Sweet Baby J’ai | April 19th in Palm Springs

By Alex Samms

In a world moving faster than most of us can catch our breath, music remains one of the few things that bring us together. That’s exactly what the Sunset Music & Education Foundation (SMEF) is all about—creating access to comprehensive music education, supporting young musicians, and bringing world-class performances to the Coachella Valley.

Now, SMEF invites the community to experience it all under one soulful roof at a Sunset Jazz Soirée, happening Friday, April 19th from 5–7 PM at a stunning private Modernism home in Palm Springs.

The evening features an intimate performance by internationally acclaimed pianist Yuko Mabuchi, known for her fiery blend of jazz, classical, and R&B. Also showcased is the work of celebrated visual artist Bernard Hoyes, whose vibrant pieces honoring African diasporic traditions will be available through a special art auction benefiting SMEF’s SMARTS Initiative.

Founded by multi-award-winning artist and jazz ambassador Sweet Baby J’ai, SMEF provides students across the Coachella Valley with mentorship, scholarships, instruments, and performance opportunities.

“We’re not just giving kids instruments,” says J’ai. “We’re giving them hope, confidence, and a creative outlet to carry them through the chaos of the world.”

Recent efforts include a Community Impact Celebration at Hotel Paseo’s Larkspur Grill, where students from Painted Hills Middle School received new instruments thanks to the hotel’s $10,000 Legacy Sponsorship.

“Seeing their faces when they received their instruments was unforgettable,” said SMEF Board President Gladys Brown, JD. It was a reminder that music can be both a refuge and a bridge to a better future.” Community partners like Larkspur Grill show how powerful it is when local businesses invest in the well-being of their communities—creating joy, access, and lasting impact.

When J’ai discovered that many students weren’t allowed to take their instruments home, SMEF responded—ensuring students not only received instruments but also had the support to practice and grow. It’s about more than music—it’s about equity and empowerment.

According to the National Institutes of Health, music education improves cognitive function, language development, and graduation rates. Music also benefits adults, reducing stress and building community connection.

This spirit will shine again at the Sunset Music & Comedy Festival, returning November 6–9 during Pride and Veterans Day Weekend. The festival will feature these vibrant events filled with live music, top comedians, LGBTQ+ artists, and youth performers.

“Music isn’t just a performance,” says J’ai. “It’s an experience. It’s healing. It’s education. It’s how we tell our stories.”
