The wors “art” and “innovation” typically go hand in hand. Art is innovation, dependent upon how you view it. Yet, in the case of Mr. Joey Chavez, owner and lead artist of The Trusted Tattoo Company and mobile Body Art Bus, the two are distinct characteristics that define one of Southern California’s standout tattoo artists, and business.

From humble, yet disciplined beginnings, Joey Chavez, an artist by nature, was raised by two United States veterans. His dad, Mr. Chavez served in the United States’ Marine Corps for
thirty-years as a communications specialist. Joey’s mother, Mrs. Chavez, completed four-years as part of the United States’ Marine Corps within the administration department. Inevitably, some may say, young Joey followed in his parent’s footsteps. He, likewise enlisted in the United States’ Marine Corps and completed four-years of service as a MOS 4611 Combat Illustrator.

The combination of Joey’s natural artistic inclination, coupled by his passion to want to serve others, and training, in terms of discipline within the United States’ Marine Corps, helped propel his vision of creating a stable platform for artists to practice their craft, and practice it well while earning a decent living. As Joey once told me – “In the days of the renaissance for example, artists could be commissioned by a nobleman and bankrolled for the rest of their lives for their art. In our economy, it’s more difficult for artists to earn a decent and consistent wage for what they love to, and are talented at doing.” It was inspiring for me to hear a United States veteran, artist, and business owner say such a thing.

Today, Joey is one of the more prominent Southern California tattoo artists. As President of The Trusted Tattoo Company, Joey oversees its physical locations, and talented team of tattoo artists. As creator and owner of the mobile Body Art Bus, Joey can oftentimes be found crafting tattoos at various locations around Southern California, as well as out of state. That is just one of the many perks of owning his own tattoo studio (on wheels) – an accomplishment that sent shockwaves across the state.

In 2009, Joey became the first fully-licensed individual to own and operate a mobile tattoo studio. More recently, Joey’s unique method of designing the mobile tattoo studio has become such a hit that other tattoo artists now commission Joey to design their buses.

It’s safe to say that Joey Chavez is a true patriot, a true American, wanting for not just he, but for those around him to survive, and indeed thrive.
