It may be overeacting, but like many of my readers, I am fed up with the scam calls…and I am a lawyer and should be able to tell the truth from a lie. On 7/23/23, our Desert Sun reported that Federal authorities are ramping up the war on phone scams with a new campaign known as Operation Stop Scam Calls This has resulted in millions of dollars in fines and bans. However, I doubt it will put a dent in the constant calls? So what do we need?

I am so pissed at these scammers, who are prying on the elderly which means, The Greater Palm Springs Community. I am advised that 5 companies will be fined $18 Million, a drop in the proverbial bucket. There are over 30 Million scam robocalls per DAY in the USA. To be aware of the new scams I signed up for a free membership with the Daily Scam.com (https://www.thedailyscam.com) maybe you should too.

All scam calls target the most vulnerable older and more gullible. These often include Social Security Administration fraud against seniors. Yup, that’s us in the CV.

Law enforcement wants to stop lead generation consent farms, that trick seniors by offering free prizes, rewards or even potential job leads… if one provides their personal information. That consent information is then sold to telemarketers. The bottom line is, more robocalls. To stay ahead of the game, the bad guys use multiple company names, to make scams calls to AZ residents too, who are seniors like many of us.

Being an attorney I get calls like this all the time, and I don’t know what to do to stop them. I was called regarding an elderly lady in her 80’s who was scared and continued paying for a new apple phone.  Her “alleged bank”, the real scammers, advised her she owed money, and to not tell anyone because her phone was bugged. She paid them for months.

She told the police she lost everything, ($1 million dollars). She realized she was scammed, because they promised her they would have the money back to her the day before. I also heard of someone who got a call from the alleged attorneys for Eisenhower, claiming money was owed. After a little while, they said the actual Attorneys had not reviewed the file yet, so all would be ok if the amount was just paid. Eisenhower was called and nothing was owed, however, it is always good to let the entity know about alleged scams involving their company.

Beware if your bank calls, alleging fraudulent transactions, and suggests you change your password to rectify a breach. The scammers somehow know of some transactions, and advise you a large wire transfer from your account was going to take place. If this happens to you hang up, and call your bank. The 800 number is the safest. Though it may show your bank info on your phone register, it is part of the scam. I don’t know how they get things like your credit history and previous addresses, but I’m sure an investigator can ascertain that easily. They know things on your credit history, like previous addresses etc. When I hung up and called the same listed number, the answering message was similar to my banks.

It’s not if, but when, you get a scam call, it is IMPORTANT you do NOT ANSWER YES, to any question with a YES. Scammers record this and use it to grant access to your accounts. They may ask, “Is this your name here?” You should respond “who wants to know?” The bottom line is NEVER say “YES”, to any question!!!

Next week we will talk about more SCAMS…

BEING INTEXTICATED, IS JUST AS SERIOUS AS BEING INTOXICATED.

A DRIVER MUST DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO AVOID AN AT FAULT ACCIDENT.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS, “DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE OR TEXT, AND GET A DUI OR ACCIDENT…

CALL A TAXI, LYFT OR UBER….THEY ARE A LOT CHEAPER THAN CALLING ME”.
