Many of us dream. Some of us dream big. Only a very few of us take the courageous leap of faith in action necessary to make our dreams a reality. Fewer still are successful. With Coachella Valley Weekly on its third year of weekly print and internet publication, I think it is safe to say, this dream, the brain child of Owner/Publisher and Editor, Tracy Dietlin, is definitely a reality and a success that will be part of the desert’s news-scape for many years to come. In fact, it has become part of Coachella Valley history by documenting the art, music, charities and news of a community whose story was yet untold.
It would be flippant for one to think that undertaking such a responsibility under the best of circumstances is an easy thing. But to truly appreciate the accomplishment of CV Weekly, forged by its tenacious founder, there are a few things you should know. Dietlin, who had trademarked the name “Coachella Valley Weekly” and “CV Weekly” in 2005, launched this publication from nothing but sheer will and a $23,000 loan and a small handful of employees. She did this during a time of serious economic challenge nationwide, but most especially here in a seasonal community that seemed to feel the brunt of it. She did this in-spite of the competitive playing field.
Tracy Dietlin can be described as a warrior on the business battlefront but the business side of things was not the only thing challenging this resilient entrepreneur. Like the rest of us, life happens in total disregard to work deadlines. With a child who was under constant and severe medical attention due to being hit by a truck when she first started the paper, while now raising 2 teenagers, the death of friends, family members and pets, combined with her own personal, sometimes excruciatingly painful health issues, somehow (with the untiring support of partner, best friend and fiancé, Philip Lacombe), Dietlin continuously gets the paper out every single week. Meanwhile, in every issue, there are musicians and their gigs being supported free of charge, charities getting much needed publication and writing support, businesses getting the extra push (and sometimes grace) they needed to get through the next week of business. I was there from the beginning and I’ve watched it all. It is mind blowing and it is awesome.
Perhaps it is the heartbreaks survived and challenges met, that have etched a heart so deep in character that it cannot be thwarted. As one of the original members of the CV Weekly staff, it is these things that make me proud and grateful to work beside such a leader. She is a gift to all of us here at CV Weekly, and to this community we call home.
But don’t just take my word for it. To honor Tracy for her birthday I asked a few people to share what Tracy and CV Weekly means to them:
“Tracy is the most amazing person I have had the opportunity to meet and share a life with. From the time she gets out of bed to the time she returns to bed, she is all about helping her community and the people around her. She is truly inspiring to not just me but to a lot of other people too. Happy Birthday Babe, I Love You.” -Phil Lacombe
“The true desert rock bands from the 80’s should be thankful for Tracy Dietlin and her CV Weekly staff and their efforts in putting the spotlight on the musicians that made the Coachella Valley a landmark place for music all over the world.” -Gary Arce, Critically Acclaimed and Internationally known band, Yawing Man
“I’ve known Tracy for many years back when she was a freelance entertainment columnist and contributor. I remember the first time she reached out to me about our band gigs. I was so blown away by her excitement, genuine interest and passion for what local musicians were doing. What she and the folks at CV Weekly have done since, has finally legitimized and honored the efforts of local musicians, promoters and venues. All these things work together to give a music scene cultural recognition and vital energy that keeps it alive.” -Mario Lalli, Critically Acclaimed and Internationally known bands Fatso Jetson and Yawning Man, and CV Music’s Trailblazer Award, 2014
“If someone had told me there was enough advertising in this market to support a new newspaper, I would have said, ‘You’re crazy.’ Tracy is obviously crazy smart.” -Bruce Fessier, Desert Sun Writer

Thanks for everything Tracy, and happy birthday!” -Josh Heinz, Award Winning Song Writer, Musician and Founder of Blasting Echo.

“I’m at a loss on the superlatives to use when describing my feelings about Tracy. By starting CV Weekly, she gave me a place to educate and inform while entertaining CV Weekly readers. She brought a passion to publishing that seems to have been lost by others. Beyond that, she is as nice and caring a person as one will find. All of our lives are enriched by knowing her.” -Haddon Libby, CV Weekly columnist
“It’s hard to put into words what this amazing woman has done not just for the music scene but for the valley. I remember one time in particular where we had run across a one legged grass hoper. I’m pretty sure the song “Kickstart My Heart” by Mötley Crüe was playing in the background the whole time. Seriously though Tracy is like the team mom for all the desert bands. She’s had so much faith in all of us. There’s been a lot of great music out here in the desert, but not much to do. Tracy’s helped out a lot of bands over the last few years and things have changed. The unity of entertainment with the people – whether it be Music, Shows, Dining, Artists, movies, photographers etc,. you can find it in one spot: Tracy’s paper. That’s her talent. I know that I myself, and my band (Remnants of Man), will forever be grateful for her awesome support and work. Not to mention she’s just as rad a person as you could ever imagine someone to be.
