If you’re a fan of Valgur and try to describe their music to a non-fan, you would likely find it a difficult task to complete. Instead, you could defer to the brother-sister duo of Elizabeth and Hugo Valdivieso to explain, “If it’s about putting us in a box, Pop is our mold; but since we don’t like feeling trapped and curiosity tends to win, we bring in other genres like Jazz Fusion and its offshoots, as well as performance and stagecraft.”
As you listen further to the Oaxacan-born siblings, you begin to realize that it is indeed fruitless to attempt to pigeonhole the musical concoction coming from your speakers. This Sunday Valgur will be making their Coachella Valley debut at The Dune Room in Indio as they continue their Fantasy Tour Part 2 presented by Sister Midnight Productions.
Valgur are well known for addressing social and political issues within their music. Not to mention the use of symbolism on stage. Valgur believes it is important for artists to incorporate current events into their performance. “Last week, while we were in Los Angeles, we visited an exhibition at a contemporary museum called The Broad. We read a statement by the philanthropist and founder Eli Broad that said, “I like the fact that art reflects what’s happening in the world and how artists see the world.” And at some point, the great pianist/singer-songwriter Nina Simone once said in a defiant tone, “How can you be an artist and not reflect the times?” Conventionality is not something this band subscribes to. “We find it a bit difficult to separate art from the social, although it’s worth mentioning that Valgur is always weaving connections between the real and the fantastical.”
And what a fantastical upbringing these two had. Sibling rivalry was not something they subscribed to. “It’s always a bit of a mess trying to agree on what to eat during the tour—sometimes one of us wants tacos and the other wants hamburgers; sometimes one wants to stay in shape and the other doesn’t, ha ha! Because besides being siblings and bandmates, we’re best friends.” Seems the idea of family transferred nicely to the band connection.
Valgur essentially started out in music performing in a praise/worship group. Their faith continues to be incorporated into their music. They shared further, “Faith has been present in our lives from a very early age. Our mother taught us, in her own way, to have faith. At home, the religion was Christian, and we used to recite the verse: “Without faith, no one will see God.” Today we can interpret it in our own way, and it still carries strength and meaning.”
The Valdiviesos were born in the city of Juchitán. They dedicated their first album Zapandú to the city located in the region of ‘Costa Chica’. Growing up, they had their share of challenges and successes. “We grew up in a Zapotec household, surrounded by words in Zapotec, in Juchitán, Oaxaca. Our aspirations were big. We knew clearly that we wanted to dedicate ourselves to music, and in Oaxaca there was only space for traditional music, not for those who broke the mold.” And challenge the norm they did. But it took a bold relocation to the metropolis that is “El DF”. “We decided to move to Mexico City, and there we encountered our first challenge: adapting to city life, living among people who perhaps had a stronger academic background, and learning to navigate public transportation in a city that holds nearly ten million inhabitants.”
Not to be subdued by any language barriers, Valgur welcomes the internationality of their art, “We like challenges, and today we’re answering this CV Weekly interview in a foreign language, while on tour in a foreign country.” And as we know, touring in this climate is such a crucial aspect of the music industry for bands, offering multiple benefits that contribute to their success.
Most live music fans are aware how much touring has become more important than ever in being able to reach a broader population and achieve financial success. Valgur relish the opportunity to perform live. “We enjoy meeting new people every day, taking in different lifestyles, the architecture of cities, the landscapes, the food, and listening to music while driving on the road.” Post-COVID, performing live continues to grow and evolve into a priority, almost as valid as releasing new music.
Because The Dune Room is a brand-new live music venue, every artist will have a “first” performance at the 250-capacity venue. “We’re always excited to perform in new places; we’re looking forward to visiting the Coachella Valley!”
Valgur has one message for fans as they exit The Dune Room… “Magic exists! New music is on the way!”
