How many men does it take to throw a summer party that is innovative and sensational? The answer is three; Jesse Tostado, Daniel Porras and Giorg Tierez. This trinity of tomfoolery takes this partying thing pretty seriously. CV Weekly caught up with the tremendous trio at a local hangout to get a feel for what to expect this Saturday, August 23rd at the Coachella Valley Weekly sponsored Burning B-Day Bash III, a two-venue pool party and live/DJ music extravaganza in its third year.
The first half of the free event will be a pool party held at The Curve Palm Springs Hotel from 12 p.m.-7 p.m. The lineup includes All Night Shoes, EeVaan Tre & The Show, Femme A, The Hive Minds, Guy Worden, Pocket Yellow and Synthetix. The party reconvenes at Bar in Palm Springs from 9 p.m.-1:30 a.m. with THR3 STRYKES, Burning Bettie, Deadend Paradox and Spankshaft. The liberal cast of musicians and DJs are a ‘Who’s Who’ of in demand artists. It is impressive to gather them in one evening and incorporating two separate venues in one evening is a stretch but according to the buzz is working.
The event humbly began in 2012 as Burning Bettie’s coming out party and doubled as the birthday party for the unconventional Tierez. The first BBB took place in the Tierez home and included 70 of his closest friends along with performances by Alt/Punk triad Deadend Paradox and the now defunct reggae outfit F-13. The second annual BBB took place at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert with a significantly larger crowd and performances by DEP and equally rocking threesome Drop The World. Joining them again this year will be DEP who announced they will be performing new material. The short legacy of BBB has created memorable performances and now has allowed for the inclusion of DJ music and a more diverse array of artists. Enter PLab.
Tostado and Porras collectively form PLab (Party Like A Boss), a multifaceted production company that specializes in all types of music-related events. Formed out of a passion for the night life, PLab co-founder Tostado admitted, “We go out a lot!” That inkling for going out has led to a cutting-edge approach to entertainment. Using influences like the Coachella Music Festival, PLab continues to show that they are focused on continuing to build the local party scene. Porras ruminates on Coachella, “Why can’t we do something like that and keep it local?” Porras has visited many different venues in Los Angeles. “We’ve seen the best and the worst of events all over Southern California. We want to do big things and we believe we have the personalities to pull it off.” The large personas have attracted some of the best DJs in the valley. PLab contains in its roster their very own resident DJs, they include All Night Shoes, Femme A and Guy Worden. PLab are becoming luminaries of the party scene.
Even these big personalities have to pay the bills. Both Tostado and Porras keep day jobs which only fuels their fire for everything PLab. Tostado works as an Emergency Medical Technician at Eisenhower Medical Center and Porras studied civil engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. In talking with them, they may have VIP attitudes but they are grounded like no others. The VIP attitude is disseminated to their patrons. PLab wants everyone who attends their events to feel like a VIP.
PLab has facilitated events at Blu @ Copa Nightclub, Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar, Tilted Kilt and their biggest event to date, FE5T. They have also participated in philanthropic endeavors by arranging entertainment for the Relay for Life event. With BBB PLab and Tierez are keeping everything local. As Tierez puts it, “All the artists are based locally and cover every angle of music that will focus every ear in one area.” BBB III is set to surpass the attendance of both previous events combined. “It’s all about the valley and its artists. We will look to expand every year and bring attention to this mecca of music,” Tierez proclaims. Tierez, Tostado and Porras are already scouting venues and locations for next year’s event.
BBB III is proudly sponsored by CV Weekly, Strata Tattoo Lab, The Vapor Door in Palm Springs, ExtethicX.Obession Massage & Wax Bar, Crater Lake Vodka, Coldcock Whiskey, and Discount Shuttle of the Desert who will be providing transportation to and from the venues to all cities in the Coachella Valley at discount rates.
