It wasn’t lost on me that our first getaway as a family turned out to be across the street from the very same pier where my boyfriend and I had our first beach date.
Granted, the Oceanside Pier looked a little different during our visit at the end of April—a fire had broken out just days before our stay. Thankfully, the damage was minimal: no injuries and more than 90% of the pier was saved. And as of publication, the pier has partially reopened, just in time for summer.
The Seabird Resort was just a parking lot the last time we were here. But now, it’s one of the most sought after stays in Oceanside–and the perfect homebase for a family getaway this summer.
Where to Stay
Located right along the coast, The Seabird Resort offers a beachfront escape with incredible ocean views. This Destination by Hyatt hotel opened in 2021 alongside the Mission Pacific Beach Resort next door. This sister property offers a sleeker vibe, perfect for a romantic getaway. Where to Eat
When I say we are still talking about the dinner we shared at Blade 1936, it’s not an exaggeration. This Italian restaurant is about a 10- to 15-minute walk from the hotel and it is well worth the trip. Don’t miss the pappardelle ai funghi (our server insisted we add sausage to this dish and he wasn’t wrong) or the gorgonzola pizza–we’re already planning a return drive just to eat here again.
For a more casual meal, try Craft Coast Brewery & Taco Stand, just a couple blocks from the resort. The name of this indoor/outdoor brewery pretty much says it all: a rotating menu of craft beers, plus a menu of tacos, nachos, and mulitas. The food is delicious, the prices are reasonable, and we loved seeing so many other families with babies hanging around.
In the morning, the kids will love a sweet treat from Parlor Doughnuts, about a 15-minute walk from the resort. This bakery serves up some of the best doughnuts in Oceanside. The doughnuts are made fresh daily and come in a variety of flavors, including churro, campfire (s’mores-inspired), peanut butter cup, and turtle cheesecake.
For a coffee and a pastry or a light breakfast, grab an Uber over to Communal. This coffee shop is located in the heart of Oceanside and offers a variety of coffee drinks, as well as pastries, sandwiches, and salads. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, and the staff is friendly, too.
