Green Room Theatre Company (GRTC) is proud to present ‘Maggie Magalita’ by Wendy Kesselman (Tony nominee for The Diary of Anne Frank). This moving bilingual drama covers such topics as bullying, assimilation, and intergenerational relationships.
Directed by GRTC Artistic Director David Catanzarite, this Coachella Valley touring production features Maggie (Melissa Luna,) a teenager who upon immigrating to America, faced severe bullying in elementary school because she could only speak Spanish. Now, as a high school student who has found academic and social success, Maggie struggles to reconcile her immigrant and poverty background, when her Spanish speaking abuela (Norma Marcus,) comes to live with Maggie and her working mother Elena (Rebecca Luna) in their tiny apartment. Maggie must now find the balance between her re-awakened Latina roots and the life she has created in America.
This production and educational weekly discussion groups on bullying prevention and theatre training are in partnership with Boo2Bullying and the Ophelia Project, and are made possible by the generous grant donations awarded to the GRTC by the California Arts Council. Inland Empire Community Foundation, and the Anderson Children’s Foundation.
