Coachella Valley Shutout for Third Time This Season, 3-0

The Coachella Valley Firebirds, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Seattle Kraken, fell to the Ontario Reign on Saturday night at Toyota Arena in their eighth and final meeting of the regular season by the final score 3-0. It was only the third time this season that the Firebirds were shutout, putting 27 shots on Reign netminder Pheonix Copley in the loss.

QUICK NOTES

  • Ontario scored the opening goal for the first time in the eight-game regular season series as Taylor Ward converted on an odd-man rush at 14:27 of the first period.
  • Jack Studnicka extended the Reign’s lead with a wrist shot through Nikke Kokko in the second period.
  • The Reign closed out the scoring on an empty net goal from Jeff Malott inside the final three minutes of the game.
  • Coachella Valley’s record falls to 21-14-1-5. In their season series with the Reign, the Firebirds finish 4-3-0-1.
  • The Firebirds went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and did not have a powerplay. It was the fourth time in franchise history that Coachella Valley was not awarded a man-advantage in a game (11/4/22 @ ABB, 1/2/24 @ CGY, 3/23/24 vs. TEX).
  • Goaltender Nikke Kokko made 18 saves on 20 shots. The loss moves Kokko’s record to 12-3-1 and snaps his five-game winning streak.
  • Coachella Valley outshot Ontario 27-21.
