The Third Mind makes their high desert debut at Pappy & Harriet’s on Friday, February 1, 2024. The five-piece, which includes singer-songwriters Dave Alvin and Jesse Sykes, along with bassist Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven, Eyelids) drummer Michael Jerome (Richard Thompson, John Cale) and multi-instrumentalist David Immergluck (Counting Crows, John Hiatt), recorded their self-titled debut in early 2020. They recently released their sophomore album, pithily entitled Third Mind 2. Both records topped plenty of year-end Top 10 lists. (Note, for this tour Mark Karan, who has played in Bob Weir’s Ratdog and with Phil Lesh and Delaney Bramlett will be subbing for David Immergluck. The California leg of the tour will also include legendary L.A. musician Willie Aron on keys).

Dave’s original intent was to emulate Jazz giant Miles Davis’ improvisational prowess. The goal was to gather the musicians in the studio, jamming in one key until they locked into a groove. Dave and company managed to distill Folk, Psychedelia, Blues, Country, Rock and Jazz into a heady brew. Both albums offer a cogent mix of powerful originals and cover deep cuts from disparate influences like Fred Neil, Alice Coltrane, Paul Butterfield Band, The 13th Floor Elevators, Gene Clark, The Electric Flag and The Jaynetts.

By breaking out of their comfort zone, The Third Mind have created music that offers up a kaleidoscope of aural colors. Fresh and wildly extemporaneous, no song is played the same way twice.

Opening for The Third Mind is L.A. Paisley Underground legends, The Rain Parade. The band is touring behind Last Rays Of The Dying Sun, their first new album in 38 years.
