Meditations in Glass presents selections from the museum’s permanent collection, mixing pieces by well-known contemporary artists and designers, both those who work in glass occasionally and artists whose careers have focused on the medium.
Artists and designers included in the exhibition are Masahiro Asaka, Michael Aschenbrenner, Larry Bell, Lynda Benglis, Cini Boeri and Tomu Katayanagi, Charles Butcher, Fernando and Humberto Campana, Nicole Chesney, Jim Dine, Mel Douglas, Mildred Howard, Karen LaMonte, Beth Lipman, Marvin Lipofsky, Jessica Loughlin, Flora Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick, Richard Whiteley, and Christopher Wilmarth.
The varied works in this exhibition invite contemplation and stimulate daydream and reverie. Thoughts of mortality and absence, for example, are expressed in the life-sized ghostly figure of a pianist by Karen LaMonte, while Nicole Chesney’s painting offers the shimmering colors of that special, liminal time of twilight in the desert.
Glass is transformed in this exhibition from a material traditionally valued for its function into a material of metaphor. Each object inspires meditation on its subject and how the artist has used glass to communicate an idea. The works incorporate elements of both narration and abstraction, telling stories and evoking emotions in a range of different ways.
